HISTORIC BOXING GYM RETURNS TO CHICAGO
Clarence Griffin’s Windy City Boxing Club is back
and running in Chicago’s Pilsen Neighborhood
Chicago, IL, January 23, 2018 – 1992 U.S. Olympian and 1997 WBC Light Heavyweight Champion, Montell “ICE” Griffin, brings back Chicago’s historic Windy City Boxing Club. First opened in 1923 by Johnny and Marie Coulon, Montell’s father, Clarence Griffin, purchased the gym in 1973 from Coulon. When Montell was 5, his father introduced him to Muhammad Ali. They visited Ali’s home and his training camp, and Ali occasionally dropped in at Clarence Griffin’s Chicago workplace, the Windy City Boxing Club.
Today, my goal is to bring boxing back to a state of prominence in Chicago, similar to how it was in the 1920’s and 1930’s. My experience as both a professional and amateur boxer allows me the opportunity to share my extensive knowledge with all ages. Montell J. Griffin, Owner
I have both a promoter’s and trainer’s license in the state of Illinois and have a contract with the Chicago Park District’s After School Matters Program. We are fortunate to have been chosen for the second consecutive year to host The Art of Boxing program for youth from various parts of the south side of Chicago including the Bridgeport and Pilsen neighborhoods. The program is designed to help youth learn how to box, not fight, to develop, learn to overcome adversity and become more self-confident. We help prepare youth to compete in all areas of life – from the boxing ring to continued education and to his/her role as a productive member of society.
Montell is a world class trainer, who gives his clients a world class work-out. How many times in your life can you say that you’ve trained with a former World Champion and Olympian? We are fortunate to have such a trainer in Chicago. The work-out isn’t for the faint of heart or for those who lack will-power, but definitely worth it for those who seek that extra edge in life and demand the most out of their workouts. I’ve been training with Montell for almost 10 years and appreciate everything he puts into each session. Daniel McCarthy, Principal at Brook-Hollow Financial
